The 8th Annual Pet Blogger Challenge is on! This is a time when pet bloggers check in with each other to see what we can learn from each other and how we can help each other to grow. For Playful Kitty, 2017 was a year of highs and lows. There were a lot of lessons and plenty of places to improve. I look forward to what everyone’s feedback in the comment section!

1. For those who may be visiting your blog for the first time, how long have you been blogging and what is your main topic?

As the tagline suggests, Playful Kitty is all about cats, tips, and catnip trips! There are a lot of articles about caring for cats, cat health, cats in history, and cat-themed humor. My cats star in their very own weekly “comic strip” called Niptoons.

2. What was your proudest blogging moment of 2017?

I was very proud to be chosen as a speaker and ambassador for the BlogPaws Conference in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina in 2017. It was my first public speaking engagement and I think it went very well. I loved getting to bring Manna and Dexter to the conference with me as well.

3. Which of your blog posts was your favorite this year and why?

The blog post that sticks out most in my mind was my sponsored post for Wacky Paws pet slings. I did a short video reviewing the pet slings as a part of the post and that video turned out beautifully. Another favorite was our April Fool’s Day post. It was a ton of fun to revisit our silly cat-alien theme.

4. In terms of your blog, how do you measure success?

I tend to measure the success of my blog by the response it receives. Pageviews, comments, shares, the number of brands willing to work with me, the relationships I create with people, and readers asking me relevant questions are some of the ways I can see how well I’m doing.

5. In what ways has your blog changed during 2017?

I’m not sure that my blog changed very significantly over 2017. It was a very difficult year for me personally, so the biggest change was that I didn’t post as often as I usually do.

6. What was the biggest blogging challenge you overcame in 2017, and what did you learn that could help other bloggers?

One of my biggest blogging challenges in 2017 was moving my blog from http to https. I did it mostly myself. My advice to others who are moving their blogs over is not to be afraid of asking other people for advice when it comes to these technical things. Ask your host what steps you need to take and they may be able to guide you through it. I have also found that Jill Caren from 2 Dogs Media is an incredible resource. She has graciously taken time out to answer my questions (when possible) and walk me through fixes. Other bloggers have a lot more information than you might think too.

7. When things get hard, what keeps you blogging?

I really enjoy blogging. I love to learn about my cats and to interact with pet lovers from all over the world (in my own introverted sort of way). It has been fun to learn the technical side of things too – building and maintaining a WordPress website, SEO, social media strategies, marketing skills, etc. Depression is a tricky thing that makes you feel numb to things that you really enjoy, but it waxes and wanes. I keep coming back to blogging because I love it.

8. Looking forward to 2018, what are you hoping to accomplish on your blog this year?

I am looking forward to getting everything back on track with my blog in 2018. There is a lot that I’m still figuring out. I want to create a smarter posting schedule and social media strategy. Playful Kitty merchandise is in the works. I would also like to work on building up myself as a brand so that I can expand what I do as an influencer more easily.

Dexter being a goofball.

9. In addition to what you’d like to accomplish, is here one specific skill you’d like to improve or master this year?

I have to work on using video. I’m not shy about being in front of the camera, but my behind-the-camera skills are lacking. It has also been a struggle to decide what kind of content I would like to provide in my videos for Playful Kitty because I think viewers want to see the cats and not me. Trying to figure out how I can plan content that is based on trying to catch the cats doing things that are interesting is tough. I would love to get into live video too if I can resolve my content dilemma.

10. Now it’s your turn! You have the attention of the pet blogging community – is there a question you’d like answered, or an aspect of your blog that you’d like input on? Share it here, and we’ll answer you in the comments!

I would love any feedback that you have on my blog or social media channels (good or bad). What kind of content would you be interested in seeing in videos from Playful Kitty? Would it be interesting to do an informational video series on cat care, cat health, cats in history, etc? Something like a video podcast about cats? Is it better to just post random videos of my cats being cute? Other thoughts?
