Storybook Cats Take Over
These days you could fill an entire library with books that feature a cat as the main character. A quick internet search for “cats in story books” will show millions of results. If one of the classic storybook cats in our quiz didn’t fit your personality as you thought they would, it is certain that there is still a storybook cat out there that will.
Storybook cats have evolved over time as storytelling has evolved. Earlier stories use cats in much the same way the mythology of the culture at the time did. For example, in the mythology of medieval Europe, cats were seen as being in league with witches and the devil himself. The stories including Tybalt the Cat from that period show the authors’ mistrust of cats. Tybalt is seen as a cunning trickster but is also used as the butt of many jokes.
The rise of cat culture in the Victorian Era brought about a whole new sort of storybook cat. Feline characters were able to shed many of their more evil traits and they took on some new, more human ones. The artistic vision of cats even morphed into an anthropomorphic one where cats looked and behaved like their human counterparts! Storybook cats could now be wise, witty, heroic, loyal, fun-loving, child-like, and beautiful.
At present, storybook cats can portray any type of character! They can range anywhere from being realistic cats to being semi-human superheroes. Storybook cats are found everywhere in books, television, movies, social media, and other internet-based mediums. The hard part is choosing a favorite!
