We put our Sleepypod® mobile pet beds to the test! My cats made the journey with my husband and me from Detroit, Michigan to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina (16 hours on the road). These crash-tested pet carriers performed very well through every challenged they faced. Manna and Dexter are very lucky kitties to have traveled in such safety and comfort!

Manna and Dexter (in the Strawberry Red carrier) safely buckled into the car in their Sleepypod crash-tested pet carriers.

In planning our road trip,  I knew that we would be traveling for 16 hours, mostly on the freeway, going speeds of up to 70 mph (113 kph). The journey would take us across winding mountain roads in unknown weather conditions. Though my husband is a professional driver, I knew there were a lot of potential risks in taking our cats on this trip.

The company that produced the car we rented for our trip went through tons of testing to make sure my husband and I would be safe traveling in the car. I wanted to make sure that the same amount of care was being taken to ensure that my cats would be safe traveling in the car with us. That is why I chose Sleepypod®’s crash-tested pet carriers for Manna and Dexter.

Manna: “I’m ready to get on the road!”

Sleepypod crash tests their pet carriers at a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) contracted facility. NHTSA contracted facilities to test all cars and child safety seats in the United States. The Sleepypod crash-tested pet carriers are tested at the standard set for child safety restraints.

In the crash test video below, you will see how a Sleepypod crash-tested pet carrier holding a 15 lb (6.8 kg) pet would respond in a crash in which the vehicle had been going 30 mph (49 kph). The Sleepypod crash-tested pet carrier passes on excursion limit, rotation limit, and carrier integrity.

What I Learned During Our Road Trip

Thankfully, we did not have to find out how well our Sleepypod crash-tested pet carriers would have performed in a crash. Our road trip had gorgeous scenery but was otherwise uneventful. There were, however, 4 really important things that I learned from experience about our Sleepypod crash-tested pet carriers during our trip:

  1. Keeping my cats safe while they are in the car is very important to me! Keep reading to learn why I chose Sleepypod crash-tested pet carriers for my cats.

Manna (Robin’s Egg Blue carrier) and Dexter are ready for the next leg of our road trip!

My cats feel safe in their Sleepypod crash-tested pet carriers.
At one point in the road trip, we took them out of the car to use the litter box. The sound of an automatic door startled them and they both ducked back into their Sleepypod mobile pet beds. It made Manna and Dexter feel safe to be inside them.

  2. They are easy to install in the car.
It takes one person only seconds to install  Sleepypod crash-tested pet carriers in a car. The shoulder strap of the car’s regular seat belt goes underneath the padded carry handle (strong velcro) on the top of the pet carrier’s dome. The lap belt of the car’s seat belt goes around the front of the pet carrier and is placed behind another velcro strap at the front of the carrier. That’s all there is to it!
  3. The fabric inside is machine washable.
Though they were given opportunities to use the litter box, one of the cats went potty inside their Sleepypod crash-tested pet carrier just before we got to the hotel. It was really nice that all I had to do was unzip the bedding and put it in the washing machine! After air drying, the bedding was like new. The foam padding underneath is protected by a water repellent cover that only needed to be wiped down with a damp cloth.
  4. Sleepypod crash-tested pet carriers are easy to carry.
When we got to the hotel, I had to carry the cats in their Sleepypod crash-tested pet carriers up to the registration desk, then up to our room. Since these pet carriers come with both an adjustable padded shoulder strap and a padded carry handle, this wasn’t a cumbersome task. Dave carried one cat and I carried the other without awkwardly jostling the cats around.

Both my husband and me were very happy with the way our Sleepypod crash-tested pet carriers performed throughout the whole trip. It gave me a lot of peace of mind knowing that Manna and Dexter would be safe and comfortable. Everywhere we have been with these carriers, other pet owners have gushed over how awesome our Sleepypod crash-tested pet carriers are.

Convenient Yummy Travel Bowls

How we used our Sleepypod Yummy Travel Bowls at a rest stop on our road trip.

Another lifesaver on our road trip was Sleepypod’s Yummy Travel Bowls. These nesting travel pet bowls were able to keep uneaten food clean, fresh, and separate from the cats’ water. The water bowl on the bottom was almost impossible to spill (it has to be turned completely upside down).

Sleepypod’s Yummy Travel Bowls are super easy to clean too. Dried leftovers of wet cat food wiped off without much effort. This was very convenient on the road and in the hotel room. When we got home, we were able to put all of these bowls in the upper rack of our dishwasher. Feeding Manna and Dexter doesn’t get much easier than that!
