Kitties With Some Curl!
Cats know how to wear any hair style! They look great with short hair, long hair, straight hair, curly hair, barely-there hair, you name it. There is always an enviable color pattern to match too. A kitty never goes out of style.
Did you know that some cat breeds are known for their curly hair? The Cat Fancier’s Association has 6 such breeds that a registered for championship status:
There are different sorts of genes that cause these beautiful curly coats. Some, like the “rex” gene, are recessive. These coats require both of the parents to carry the curly gene in order to produce curly-haired kittens. Others, such as the American Wirehair gene, are dominant genes that only require one parent carrying the gene to produce a kitten with that beautiful curly coat.
You may know a non-purebred cat with a curly coat too! While curly coats are less common than straight haired coats, it doesn’t take a pedigree for a cat to inherit the necessary genes. Many of the cat breeds above began with non-purebred cats with unique coats that got noticed by a local cat breeder.
