Keeping Kitties Warm

A warm kitty is a happy kitty! Cold weather can be miserable, but I have to admit that I love the extra kitty cuddles that come with the winter. There’s nothing like a warm, purring cat in your lap! It warms you inside and out.

Indoor cats have a great life. They never have to know what it is like to live outside when the temperatures are dipping below freezing. Still, there are a few good reminders to help your cat be as comfortable as possible this winter.

  • Keep your cat indoors.
I know that it has been said millions of times, but if it is too cold for you to stand around outside, it is too cold for your cat to do it too. The best thing you can do to keep your cat safe and healthy is to keep them indoors.
  • Leave the heat on.
Some people try to save money by turning down their heat while they are away from your home. Don’t forget that your cat is still there! You don’t have to keep things at a tropical level, but make sure your cat will be comfortable without you there.
  • Supplement with heated beds.
Older cats and cats that are ill may not have as easy of a time staying warm as younger, healthier cats. If your kitty needs a little extra heat, try a heated cat bed or a heated blanket for pets (heated blankets for humans may get too hot).

During these months, the stray cats and ferals can use your help too. They are a little more accustom to difficult weather situations, but they are still susceptible to the cold. Here are a few things you can do to help the cats you can’t bring indoors:

  • Build a feral cat shelter.
Feral cat shelters don’t have to be expensive. They can be made with simple materials like plastic storage bins, styrofoam coolers, and hay. Ferals are simple kitties!
  • Feed the ferals in appropriate areas.
It takes a lot of calories for a cat’s body to stay warm when their environment is cold. Having plenty of fresh, available food can help a lot! Just remember that these cats will continue to return to places where they know they can find food. They may expect that you will feed them all year. It is best to feed these cats in a place that won’t bother your neighbors.
  • Keep the water fresh and unfrozen.
Even when it is cold, cats need plenty of water. Refill water bowls a few times per day to make sure they haven’t frozen solid.

I finished the word search in 1 minute and 9 seconds. Can you do it faster? ProProfs (the service I use for the word searches) says that they will be fixing the scoring very soon. Currently, you are receiving points per word that you find rather than by how quickly you find them. That is why everyone always gets the same score.
