The Good, the Bad, and the Scary!
The crisp air of the fall season is back! Life is back into a rhythmic swing and the beginning of the holiday season (Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc) is officially getting kicked off. Things are going to get busy!
Fall brings a lot of fun opportunities for humans and their kitties. Why not enjoy the festivities of Halloween together? Here are a few tips for the fall season:
- Enjoy some fresh pumpkin!
Pumpkin puree can provide great dietary fiber to your cat! When you finish carving your Jack-O-Lantern (keep knives and sharp objects out of your cat’s reach) put the fibrous material from the inside of the pumpkin in your blender and hit puree! Add a little of the pureed pumpkin to your cat’s food as a fresh, natural, supplement!
- An apple a day…
Organic apple cider vinegar (with the mother) is great for cleaning your cat’s ears! Just make sure to dilute it down with water. Some people even say that there are benefits to apple cider vinegar as a nutritional supplement for cats. The acidity is said to help with urinary tract issues.
- Watch out for blood sucking parasites!
Even though the weather is getting cooler, there may still be active parasites outdoors. Fall is known to be a time when ticks are particularly active. Take precautions against these icky bugs if your cat spends any time outdoors!
- Keep costumes comfortable
Halloween costumes are a lot of fun. They look adorable on cats and make for great social media photos. However, not all cats are really the costume wearing type. Don’t force your kitty to wear a costume that they are uncomfortable in or that restricts their movement.
- Beware of toxic treats!
Keep treats species appropriate (commercial cat treats, lean meat, etc). Cats should not be sharing Halloween candy with their human family members. Many Halloween treats are toxic to cats including chocolate and xylitol (a sugar substitute). Call your veterinarian immediately if your cat ingests these!
