Staying Cool in the Heat
There has been a heat wave passing through my part of the country. The high temperatures and high humidity have been taking their toll on me and my kitties. When temperatures rise, even indoor only cats can be affected. Manna and Dexter have been taking every opportunity to stretch out in cool spots and take a nap!
Cats are affected by heat in much the same way that humans are affected by heat. It can cause serious health problems! Here are a couple of good tips and reminders to help keep your cat healthy through the summer months:
- Keep plenty of fresh, cool water available for your cat.
Dehydration is a real problem for cats. They have a very low thirst drive and must be encouraged drink more often – especially when it is hot outside. Extra water bowls, different kinds of water bowls, and pet fountains can help!
- Make sure your cat has cool places to rest.
If a cat can’t get out of extreme heat, heatstroke may set in. A cool tile floor or bathtub, a shady area, or a fan can help a kitty find reprieve from hot temperatures. If you like to turn your air conditioning off while you are at work, keep in mind what the temperature of the home will be while you are away.
- Be aware of how much time your cat spends in direct sunlight.
There is nothing wrong with a cat that loves to sleep in sun puddles. However, cats are susceptible to sunburns and skin cancer. The areas that are most likely to be affected are the ears, nose, and any other part of the body with little fur covering. Ask your veterinarian before using any sunscreen on your cat because human sunscreens may have harmful ingredients.
- Take measures to prevent any parasites that your cat is likely to encounter.
Outdoor cats are the most likely to have problems with parasites, but it can happen to indoor cats too. If you have a dog that goes outdoors, that dog can track fleas and ticks back indoors with him/her. Also, mosquitoes can pretty easily enter a home, bite the indoor cat, and spread heartworms.
