What is Dehydration in Cats?

Manna (background) and Dexter deciding if they are thirsdy.

When the fluid levels in a cat’s body drop below normal, the cat is dehydrated. A cat’s body is made up of about 80% water, so many medical conditions can result from dehydration. What parts of a cat’s body are commonly affected?

  • Urinary Tract
  • Kidneys
  • Digestive tract
  • Circulatory system
  • Body temperature regulation

How does a cat become dehydrated? Either by not drinking enough water or experiencing increased fluid loss (through hot weather, increased activity, vomiting, diarrhea, etc). Kitties with medical disorders such as  kidney disorders, cancer, and hyperthyroidism are more susceptible to dehydration than healthy cats.

Signs Your Cat May Be Dehydrated

Dehydration, especially when severe or chronic, can be a serious medical problem. It can also be a symptom of other serious problems. Contact your veterinarian if you believe your cat is suffering from dehydration. Watch for:

  • Vomiting/ Diarrhea
  • Lack of energy
  • Panting
  • Loss of appetite
  • Sunken dry eyes
  • Dry and sticky gums
  • Loss of skin elasticity

How Much Water Should Your Cat Drink?

Dexter taking a drink.

Cats need to drink about 1 ounce of water per pound of body weight each day. It’s important that fluid intake increases as food intake increases. The more food a cat eats, the more waste that needs to be expelled from the body (which equals more fluid loss). If there is not enough water being taken in to cover the needs of waste removal, the cat may lose the ability to correctly regulate his/her body temperature.

Unlike humans and dogs, cats don’t get thirsty easily. A cat may lose 8% or more of his/her body’s moisture reserves before feeling the urge to take a drink. For this reason, wet cat food (70% + moisture) is highly recommended over dry cat food  (7 – 10% moisture).

Proper hydration will lead to better health for your cat. Better health for your cat means spending less money on veterinary care and a longer, happier life with your cat. Proper hydration can:

  1. Prevent urinary tract infections and disease.
Being properly hydrated allows the most efficient filtering of waste and toxins by the kidneys. It also dilutes and pushes those toxins throughout the rest of the urinary tract. Insufficient hydration can cause toxins to build up in the urinary tract causing infections and disease.
  2. Aid with energy levels and temperature regulation.
A cat’s body uses water to help convert fat into usable energy. It also cools the body as the cat exercises, allowing him/her to exercise more.
  3. Speed recovery time from sickness or injury.
When your cat is sick, his/her body will use water in the process of removing viruses, bacteria, and other illness-causing agents.

Review: The PetSafe Drinkwell Sedona Pet Fountain

Manna thinking about taking a drink.

PetSafe gave Manna and Dexter the opportunity to review the PetSafe Drinkwell Sedona Pet Fountain. I have never tried a pet fountain with my cats before, so it was a new adventure for all of us. Dexter had shown some interest in flowing water in the sink, so I was really excited to try this with him!

The PetSafe Drinkwell Sedona Pet Fountain was easy to assemble. The directions were very  clear and helpful.  It only took about 5 minutes for me to put it all together (with help from the cats at every move).

Dexter claiming his fountain.

One reason I hadn’t tried a pet fountain with my cats is that I wasn’t sure where to place it. We live in a small 1-bedroom apartment. The only spot that really worked was in the living room. I was concerned about the noise. What if the fountain sounded like a roaring waterfall? Would I have to unplug it every time I wanted to watch tv? Would it drive me nuts while I was working on my computer? I am one of those people that must have complete silence to concentrate.

I was pleasantly surprised by this fountain. It says “whisper quiet” on the packaging and it means it. I can’t hear it when I am sitting right next to it!  It is a perfect fit in my living room. I put a sturdy waterproof mat with a lip on it underneath the fountain to keep my carpet dry.

The design of the fountain is awesome. It’s a subtle, elegant look that would fit with any decor. The clear bowl is beautiful, hypnotizing, and makes it easy to tell where the water level is at. This fountain is large enough that I am not constantly having to refill it. It filters the water too!

Dexter loves this pet fountain! I see him drinking out of it all the time. He gets really excited about it when I put an ice cube or two in the fountain for him to chase around.

Manna is still warming up to the idea of drinking from a fountain, but I see her go over to it and sniff the water at least a few times a day. She may be drinking it while I’m not looking (she is sneaky like that).

Overall, I would highly recommend the PetSafe Drinkwell Sedona Pet Fountain to other cat owners. It is a very helpful tool in keeping your cats properly hydrated and it is perfect for any home.
