Cat litter is a mandatory part of any cat owners life. It gives our kitties an appropriate place “to do their business.” Most of the cat litter is confined to the litter box, but somehow there is always a portion of the litter that travels around our homes – cat litter scatter. Cat litter scatter can be bothersome to cat owners who have to clean it out of their carpet and furniture. I have found cat litter in my couch and even on my bed in the past. Getting a cat litter mat can be very helpful with reducing the amount of litter that escapes the litter box area!
The KittyPal Litter Mat
The KittyPal litter mat is a simple, but effective way to eliminate cat litter scatter in your home. It is a large 35-inch X 23-inch (88.9 cm X 58.42 cm) litter mat made of woven PVC threads. The PVC carpeting is firm but soft on a kitty’s paws. Here is how it works:
Tuck the litter mat slightly under your cat’s litter box allowing most of the litter max to be exposed outside the litter box’s opening.
- When your cat finishes using the litter box, the cat will walk on (and potentially scratch) the litter mat, wiping any stray litter off of his/her feet.
- The KittyPal litter mat will trap and hold the excess litter from your cat’s paws until you clean out the litter mat. This prevents the litter from traveling outside the litter box area!
Cleaning the KittyPal litter mat is easy. Simply take the litter mat outside to an appropriate area and firmly shake it. The KittyPal litter mat weighs only 1.3 pounds (0.59 kg), so carrying it is easy. The litter mat can also be vacuumed if you prefer. When there are messes on the mat, those can be washed off with water from a hose or wash tub.

Cinco and Manna’s Opinion of the KittyPal Litter Mat
Cinco and Manna received a KittyPal litter mat to try! Inside the box, the litter mat came rolled up in a plastic wrap. When I unrolled it, my first thought was “wow, that’s big.” It is about the 3/4 of the size of an average bath towel. The litter mat has a cute design with cat paw prints and “KittyPal” tattooed into it. It only comes in gray, but our carpet is gray, so that works great for us.
The litter mats we have used in the past have always been really small (mostly because that is the size I usually find them in at the store). A complaint I’ve always had about the smaller litter mats is that they are so small that the cats barely touch them when exiting the litter box. That is definitely not the case with the KittyPal litter mat. It is large enough for the cats to take a few steps on when they leave the litter box. It is also large enough (and heavy enough) that when my cats decide to scratch outside the litter box, it doesn’t lift up or move around on the floor.
The construction of the KittyPal litter mat is solid. We have only had it a couple of weeks, but the scratching of two cats has not caused any visible wear. The PVC weave has a tight, firm feel, but it is soft. It looks like it might feel pokey, but it doesn’t. Cinco and Manna don’t seem to be bothered by the feel of it at all. They just do their business as usual. Cinco scratches around like he’s digging to China. Manna thinks there’s no reason to waste too much time with the burying half of things.
My preference when cleaning the KittyPal litter mat is to vacuum it. It comes clean as easily as any other rug with the vacuum. Since I live in a second-floor apartment, there aren’t any convenient places to shake out the mat. From carrying it around, it feels like it would be fairly easy to shake out because it has a little weight to it. Cinco and Manna have been very polite since we’ve gotten the mat and haven’t made any messes to clean up. It does seem like it would be easy to wash off with a hose or in the tub. Since it is made from PVC, I would imagine that any cat-safe cleaning agent would work fine to eliminate germs too.
Overall, Cinco, Manna and I think the KittyPal litter mat is a winner! It doesn’t have any bells or whistles, but it does a great job of collecting cat litter.
