A Modern Breed with a Link to Ancient Mythology

The ancients believed in a mythological creature called a sphinx from which the Sphynx cat breed gets its name. These creatures were wise and mysterious; they had the body of a lion, a human head, and wings. An enormous statue of a sphinx in Giza, Egypt, which was built by the Ancient Egyptians. The statue predates even the pyramids!

A very famous Ancient Greek myth also speaks of a sphinx. It says that a sphinx guarded the city of Thebes. In order to get into the city, a person must answer her riddle. If a person could not answer correctly, the sphinx would eat them. No one had ever answered correctly. Oedipus, a man who was left to die at birth only to be adopted by a king, came upon the sphinx as he was running to escape his destiny. The sphinx asked him this riddle: “What goes on four feet in the morning, two feet in the afternoon, and three feet in the evening?” Oedipus answered correctly (I will include the answer as one of the words in the word search), which caused the sphinx to kill herself in shame. Oedipus would go on to become the King of Thebes and unknowingly marry his own mother.

Sphynx cats aren’t likely to ask any riddles or eat you, but they are likely to steal your heart. Even though they might look bald, they actually aren’t completely hairless. There are varying levels of hair on these kitties! Most have at least a coat of fine hair all across their bodies. Sphynx cats are loving, full of energy and are as healthy as any other cat breed.
