Cleanliness is next to catliness!

Cats love to keep themselves neat and clean. Most of their waking hours are spent making sure that every hair is purrrfectly in place. Even with all of this self-grooming, cats can need a little help from their human companions. Here are 3 important reasons to groom your cat:

  1. Health and Sanitation
Sometimes older cats, obese cats, or cats with certain medical conditions can’t reach certain parts of their body to groom them themselves. This can include some areas that can be a breeding ground for infectious bacteria, such as around the anus. Sometimes even very healthy cats can get things in their hair that would be difficult or dangerous for them to clean off themselves. Making sure your kitty stays as clean as possible can keep them from getting sick!
  2. Knots and Mats
These are more of a problem for long-haired cats than short-haired cats, but it can happen to any kitty with hair! Knots and mats can be very painful and potentially a cause of stress for cats.
  3. Relief from shedding and hairballs.
Even short-haired cats shed. Some of them shed quite a lot. Regular grooming can tame that shedding undercoat so it doesn’t have to end up all over your home. It can also keep your cat from ingesting all of that hair during self-grooming and coughing it back up as hairballs.

The longer your cat’s hair, the more grooming you will need to do. Making grooming a part of your daily routine can help to keep things simple and to get the cat used to being groomed. After all, if the knots and mats aren’t given a chance to form, then you won’t have to spend any time untangling them!
