Kitties are totally connected!
Despite what the rumors say, kitties are not asocial. Humans have a bad habit of believing that when someone doesn’t socialize in the same way they do, that they do not socialize. The European explorers believed that the Native Americans did not have an organized society for the same reason. It’s true that cats don’t need to live in groups to survive, but they tend to choose to live together.
Cats have a social structure that is all their own. It tends to be based on groups of female cats that bond to help each other raise their kittens. There is a social hierarchy within a group of cats, but it isn’t as strictly adhered to as it is in dogs. Unlike lions, groups of domestic female cats don’t really hunt together. This could be because domestic cats hunt much smaller prey that doesn’t require a group attack. Still the groups of domestic female cats groom each other, allow each other’s kittens to drink their milk, and sometimes will even act as midwives for one another.
It is very important to socialize kittens when they are very young. In these early weeks of life, the kitten learns whether or not humans and other creatures are safe to be around. They also develop a sense of whether or not changing surroundings will be okay for them. Just being held for a few minutes every day as a little kitten can make a world of difference in the cat’s relationship with you and other humans.
