Playful Kitty is a blog with a mission. It is true that I decided to start blogging when I was looking for a way to make money from home, but it has turned into something much larger. The topic I’ve chosen means so much more to me than a few dollars from affiliate links.

The Story That Drives the Mission

Goals of Playful Kitty Obi Wan

Obi Wan (ORTB) hanging out.

Obi Wan was an adorable orange and white cat that was given to me by a friend of a friend. He was only a little over a year old when my husband and I adopted him. Obi was loaded with personality; He greeted us at the door, loved to play, and got into all sorts of mischief.

We only had Obi for about 6 months before he began urinating outside of the litter box. Being a first time cat owner,  I naturally thought he was misbehaving. Luckily someone suggested that I should take him to the veterinarian and have him checked out.

Obi was diagnosed with a bladder infection, given a prescription and sent home. The medications cleared up the infection, but it was back within a few weeks. We went to the vet again and got meds again. This cycle repeated over and over for a couple of months and we finally went to another veterinarian. This veterinarian gave us meds, a perscription food, and told us that Obi had a very rare genetic disease that only affects 1 in 4,000 male cats.

We started him on the meds and food from the new veterinarian that night. In the morning I woke up to find Obi laying in his carrier with a pool of blood. He was still alive, but the veterinarian told us that his bladder had ruptured and it would be best if we had him put down. I cried so hard that I needed assistance getting back to my car.

All of the Lingering Questions

Goals of Playful Kitty Cinco

Cinco pondering his own questions.

After Obi went over the Rainbow Bridge, I started having a lot of questions. I wanted to know more about how cats communicate so that I could catch on to symptoms like urinating outside of the litter box earlier. I wanted to figure out how this happened to Obi – he was only 2 years old when he passed. I wanted to make sure that I didn’t repeat the same mistakes again.

Knowing what I know now, I have even more questions resulting from this experience. Why didn’t anyone ever tell me that switching to wet food could help with a cat’s urinary tract issues?  Does this “rare disease” that the 2nd veterinarian told me Obi had even exist? I have a feeling that it doesn’t and she was just trying to comfort me by telling me the situation wasn’t my fault. Why are veterinarians giving a dry prescription food to cats with urinary tract problems? Neither veterinarian ever mentioned anything about crystals building up in the bladder. As this is the most likely cause of a ruptured bladder, why didn’t this come up?

Turning Pain into Purpose

I am not a veterinarian. I don’t hold any animal related college degrees. Actually, my college background is in Special Education. For years I’ve worked with people who have disabilities like Autism and Down Syndrome. I also have very strong story crafting skills as I have been an actress for years as well.

Just like most of the people who read Playful Kitty, I’m a concerned pet parent. I want the best possible life for my kitties. I am learning more and more about cats as I write this blog. As I learn new things, I compile the information and share it with all of you. I want to have a free-to-use, easy-to-access, and easy to read resource for cat owners like me who just want to get to know their kitty better. I hope that this blog can help a few other cat owners learn things that will keep them out of situations like I was in with Obi Wan.

Playful Kitty’s Goals & Moving Forward

Goals of Playful Kitty Manna

As can be seen on the About Playful Kitty page of this site, Playful Kitty has 3 goals: engage, educate, and explore. I want to engage with cat lovers all around the world. Cat lovers are great people and we can all teach and help one another. Unfortunately, cats don’t come with an instruction manual. I want to educate cat owners because I know how much good, accurate, insightful information would have meant to me in situations like the one with Obi Wan. I want to explore because it is so eye opening to see that cats have a history with mankind and have influenced a lot of things in human culture.

Things only keep getting better! Playful Kitty’s first blogoversary won’t be until September and there has already been tremendous growth. I’m working on making the site as easy to read, navigate, and find on the web as possible. Great product reviews and giveaways are on their way soon! I am also working on ways to integrate animal rescue activities into Playful Kitty.  There is so much potential to help other cat owners an their cats! I hope you all will continue to join me as things continue to improve.
